Tirana to Shkoder — Bus, Train and Car Options

Tirana and Shkodër are separated by roughly 105–110 kilometres of road. The most widely used connection is the intercity bus, while driving offers more control over departure time and stops. A direct passenger train between the two cities is not currently available, even though railway lines and older fare information may still appear on maps or transport websites.

    How the Tirana–Shkodër Route Works

Tirana lies southeast of Shkodër, and road transport follows Albania’s northbound corridor through or near Fushë-Krujë, Thumanë and Lezhë. The final section continues toward Shkodër on the SH1 corridor.

Published road and bus distances vary between approximately 105 and 110 kilometres. The difference usually comes from the exact pickup point in Tirana, the arrival point in Shkodër and the road selected around the capital.

Travel time is affected more by traffic than by distance. Congestion can form while leaving Tirana, near junctions around Fushë-Krujë and on the approach to Lezhë. Summer traffic heading toward northern coastal areas can also lengthen the journey.

    Lowest-Cost Choice

The regular intercity bus from Tirana’s North and South Bus Terminal is usually the least expensive option.

    Most Flexible Choice

A car allows departure from any part of Tirana and makes stops near Lezhë or other places along the corridor possible.

    Unavailable Choice

There is no scheduled through passenger train that can be used for a normal Tirana–Shkodër journey.

    Tirana to Shkodër by Bus

Regular buses and minibuses form the main public-transport connection between the two cities. Services operate throughout the day, but Albania’s intercity network does not function like a single national coach company. Different operators may use different vehicles, prices, booking systems and pickup points.

The municipal timetable published for Tirana’s North and South Bus Terminal lists Shkodër departures beginning at 05:00 and continuing until 18:00, with many departures shown at 30-minute intervals. Online-bookable operators display their own schedules, which may start later, finish earlier or depart from another location.

Departure times found online are not always describing the same service. A municipal terminal bus, a reservable hostel-to-hostel shuttle and an airport van can all appear under the name “Tirana to Shkodër.” The address printed on the ticket or supplied by the operator is more reliable than the route name alone.

    Finding the Correct Departure Point

Most standard intercity departures use the North and South Bus Terminal, written in Albanian as Terminali i Autobusëve të Jugut dhe Veriut. It is located outside Tirana’s central sightseeing area, toward the northwestern side of the city.

The terminal should not be confused with Tirana’s East Bus Terminal, the international coach stops around the city or the airport shuttle departure point. A search for “Tirana bus station” can display several unrelated terminals.

    • Regular Shkodër service: normally associated with the North and South Bus Terminal.
    • Online private service: may use a central street, hostel or hotel pickup address.
    • Airport shuttle: departs from Tirana International Airport rather than Tirana city centre.
    • International coach: may use a separate terminal and should not be assumed to carry domestic passengers.

A taxi is the simplest way to reach the North and South Bus Terminal with large luggage. Urban buses also serve the wider terminal area, but routes, stop names and traffic conditions can change. Allowing extra time for the transfer across Tirana prevents a missed intercity departure.

    Bus Times, Tickets and Payment

There are two main ticket patterns on this route. Traditional terminal services are generally purchased at the terminal or directly from the driver. Reservable private services are sold online and usually include a confirmed seat and an exact pickup address.

Service TypeCommon Price LevelHow the Ticket Is BoughtSeat Arrangement
Terminal bus or minibusOften around 500 Albanian lekUsually at the terminal or on boardA seat may not be assigned in advance
Online-bookable operatorOften €10–€15Online before departureReservation is normally confirmed
Airport–Shkodër shuttleOfficial airport information lists 1,000 lekOperator booking or airport arrangementDepends on the shuttle operator

Carrying Albanian lek is useful for terminal-based transport. Some operators may accept euros, but the exchange calculation is set by the person taking payment and change may be returned in lek. Card payment should not be expected unless it is clearly offered during online booking.

Travellers using a traditional terminal departure should arrive before the listed time, particularly during busy travel periods. A vehicle may begin boarding early, and the boarding area may be organised by destination signs rather than numbered platforms.

    Journey and Arrival in Shkodër

The bus journey normally takes close to two hours. A faster run is possible when traffic is light, while delays around Tirana or Lezhë can push the total beyond two and a half hours.

Many local services arrive near Sheshi Demokracia or another central stop in Shkodër. Private operators may use G’juhadol, a hotel, a hostel or a designated roadside address. Shkodër does not have one universal arrival point used by every operator.

The central urban area is fairly compact, but accommodation on the lakeside, near Rozafa Castle or outside the centre may require a taxi or local transfer. The arrival address should therefore be checked before choosing between two similarly timed services.

    Travelling Directly from Tirana Airport

Tirana International Airport is northwest of central Tirana and closer to the northbound road corridor. Passengers arriving by air do not always need to travel into the capital before continuing to Shkodër.

The airport’s official transport page lists a direct Hermes Airport shuttle between Tirana International Airport and Shkodër. The displayed fare is 1,000 Albanian lek. The airport page and the operator’s own website may display different numbers of daily departures, so a confirmed operator reservation should be treated as the final schedule.

City and airport departures are separate. A ticket marked “Tirana Airport” or “Rinas” cannot be assumed to depart from the North and South Bus Terminal. Likewise, a standard city-terminal ticket does not normally include transportation from the airport.

Current Train Situation Between Tirana and Shkodër

A direct, scheduled passenger train from Tirana to Shkodër is not currently available. The route cannot be booked as an ordinary rail journey, and travellers should not go to a railway station expecting a daily through service.

Confusion arises because Albania’s railway operator still publishes railway maps, route names, fare tables and information connected with older or limited services. Some pages may show historical fares involving Kashar, Vorë, Lezhë or Shkodër without providing a current train that completes the Tirana–Shkodër journey.

Why a Rail Route May Appear in Search Results

    • The physical railway corridor exists in parts of northern Albania.
    • Older fare tables remain accessible online.
    • Limited passenger services may operate on separate sections of the network.
    • Railway rehabilitation projects refer to future passenger connections.
    • Map applications may display railway lines without confirming an operating passenger timetable.

The absence of a through train means that combining unrelated rail segments would not create a dependable alternative to the bus. Current passenger timetables should always be checked on the official Hekurudha Shqiptare transport page rather than inferred from the railway map.

    Driving from Tirana to Shkodër

Driving is the most flexible option for travellers who already have a vehicle, are travelling as a group or need to continue beyond central Shkodër. Under normal conditions, the journey takes approximately one hour and 45 minutes to two hours and 15 minutes.

The exact route depends on the starting district in Tirana and the navigation setting selected. Most routes connect with the northbound corridor toward Fushë-Krujë and Thumanë, continue toward Lezhë and follow SH1 into Shkodër.

    Road Sections Along the Journey

    1. Tirana departure: the route first crosses the capital’s outer urban road network.
    2. Fushë-Krujë and Thumanë: the journey joins the main northern corridor.
    3. Milot and Lezhë area: northbound traffic continues toward the coastal plain.
    4. SH1 toward Shkodër: the final road section enters Shkodër from the south.

Road signs may use the Albanian spelling Shkodër, while navigation systems and rental documents may use Shkoder. Both refer to the same city.

    Toll and Toll-Free Routes

A navigation application may direct drivers onto the Kashar–Thumanë motorway. This faster road is tolled. The published full-section tariff for a standard passenger car has been approximately 250 lek in one direction, although tariffs can be recalculated and shorter entry points may be treated differently.

The older road network provides a toll-free alternative. It may be selected by enabling “avoid tolls” in the navigation application, but the journey can take longer because of junctions, local traffic and lower average speeds.

    Route ChoicePaymentTravel Character
Kashar–Thumanë motorwayToll appliesControlled-access road designed to bypass slower local sections
Older road corridorNo motorway toll for this sectionMore junctions, roadside development and variable traffic

A small amount of Albanian lek should be kept available even when card payment appears possible. Toll-lane payment methods and open lanes can change, and rental companies may have their own instructions for electronic tags or road charges.

Rental-Car Conditions That Affect the Journey

The advertised daily rental price is only one part of the cost. The final amount can also include insurance level, deposit, fuel policy, airport surcharge, additional driver fee and a one-way return charge.

    • Confirm whether the vehicle can be collected in central Tirana or only at the airport.
    • Check whether returning the car in Shkodër is permitted.
    • Read the fuel policy before leaving the collection point.
    • Inspect the recorded condition of the vehicle and retain the rental agreement.
    • Ask how motorway tolls are handled if the vehicle has an electronic payment device.
    • Verify any conditions that apply to taking the car beyond Albania if Shkodër is part of a longer cross-border journey.

A one-way rental can be convenient, but many companies either require the vehicle to be returned to Tirana or charge for relocation. This condition should be confirmed before comparing the car with a one-way bus ticket.

    Luggage, Bicycles and Accessibility

Vehicle type is not uniform on the Tirana–Shkodër route. A departure may use a full-size coach, a mid-size bus or a minibus. This affects luggage storage, boarding height, aisle width and the amount of space available inside.

    Large Suitcases

Coaches commonly have an external luggage compartment, while minibuses may place bags behind the final row or in a smaller rear area. Oversized luggage should be declared to the operator rather than assumed to fit.

    Bicycles and Sports Equipment

There is no single route-wide bicycle policy. Acceptance depends on vehicle size, available storage and the operator. A bicycle, boxed item or bulky sports bag should be approved before the departure day.

    Step-Free Boarding

Step-free access cannot be assumed on every intercity vehicle. Passengers who need a low-floor entrance, wheelchair space or assistance with boarding should contact the operator and obtain confirmation for the specific departure.

A confirmed online ticket reserves transportation, but it does not automatically confirm space for a bicycle, wheelchair, oversized suitcase or other large item unless the operator states this separately.

    Connections After Reaching Shkodër

Shkodër is a transport base for destinations in northern Albania. Some travellers continue toward Theth, Lake Koman, the Albanian Alps, Lake Shkodër or settlements closer to the Montenegro border.

These onward services should not be treated as extensions of the Tirana bus ticket. They may depart from another point in Shkodër, operate seasonally or leave earlier in the day. A late-afternoon arrival from Tirana may therefore require an overnight stay before continuing.

Private transfers and accommodation-arranged vehicles may collect passengers directly, while local minibuses can use informal or operator-specific stops. The onward pickup address and departure time should be confirmed independently.

    Questions About the Tirana–Shkodër Route

How Long Does the Bus from Tirana to Shkodër Take?

Most services take around two hours. Light traffic can shorten the journey, while congestion may extend it beyond two and a half hours.

Where Does the Bus Leave from in Tirana?

Regular intercity services normally depart from the North and South Bus Terminal. Some private operators use central pickup addresses, so the location on the individual ticket must be checked.

Can a Tirana–Shkodër Bus Be Booked Online?

Some services can be booked online, but many traditional terminal departures are still paid for at the station or on board. Online services may cost more because they provide a reserved seat or a different pickup arrangement.

Is There a Direct Train from Tirana to Shkodër?

No scheduled through passenger train currently connects the two cities. Railway maps and older fare tables do not confirm an operating daily service.

Is the Drive from Tirana to Shkodër Tolled?

It can be. Navigation systems may use the tolled Kashar–Thumanë motorway. A toll-free alternative exists through the older road corridor, although it can take longer.

Yes. Tirana International Airport publishes a direct shuttle connection to Shkodër. The airport service is separate from buses departing from Tirana’s city terminal.

Does the Bus Stop in Lezhë?

Some local services may make intermediate stops, while express or private services may run directly. The stopping pattern depends on the operator and should be checked before boarding.

Transport information can change. Departure times, fares, pickup points, toll charges and railway operations should be verified with the terminal, transport operator or responsible public authority before travel. A booking confirmation containing a specific date, time and address takes precedence over a general route listing.
