Taxis are widely available in Tirana and in many of Albania’s larger cities, but there is no single nationwide taxi price that applies to every journey. Local authorities set taxi tariffs, traditional taxis may use a taximeter, local apps can show a fare before booking, and Tirana International Airport has its own official taxi operator. For visitors, the simplest approach is to know which pricing system applies before the ride starts and to keep Albanian lek available even when a card option is offered.
Local taxi apps have also become much more useful. Uber and Bolt are not currently available for taxi bookings in Albania, so services such as Patoko, VrapOn and Speed Taxi fill much of that role. Their coverage, payment methods and fare systems are not identical, which makes the choice of app more important than simply installing the first one that appears in an app store.
For a normal city ride: an app with a displayed fare is often the easiest option for a visitor. At Tirana International Airport: the official yellow airport taxis are available directly outside the terminal, while app-booked taxis require the meeting point to be confirmed through the app or with the driver.

How Taxis Work in Albania
Albania has several types of taxi booking in use at the same time. In Tirana, a traveler can find a taxi at a rank, call a taxi company, request one through a local app or arrange a fixed-price transfer. The same choices are available to varying degrees in Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë, Shkodër and other larger cities.
Street and Taxi-Rank Rides
A conventional licensed taxi can be taken from a taxi rank or hailed where local conditions allow. Albania’s taxi regulations provide for taximeters that calculate a fare using distance and, below a defined speed, time. Municipalities can set different tariff values, including distinctions connected with daytime, nighttime and journeys inside or outside the urban area.
This is why a single claim such as “every taxi in Albania costs X lek per kilometre” is unreliable. The municipality, taxi operator and type of journey all matter.
App-Booked Taxis
Albanian taxi apps generally connect passengers with local taxi drivers rather than operating exactly like every international ride-hailing platform. Depending on the app, the passenger may see an estimated or fixed fare, the approaching vehicle, its location and booking details before the ride begins.
Fixed-Price Transfers
Fixed pricing is especially common for airport and intercity journeys. A total fare is agreed or displayed for the complete route rather than calculated only from a city taximeter. For a trip from Tirana Airport to Durrës, Vlorë, Shkodër, Berat or southern Albania, a fixed quote makes it easier to know the full transport cost before departure.
Taximeter
Distance and time determine the fare under the applicable tariff.
App Fare
The app displays an estimate or price before the booking is confirmed.
Fixed Transfer
A total price is set for the complete route, commonly for airport or intercity travel.
How Taxi Prices Are Set
Albanian transport rules give municipalities a role in setting taxi tariff values. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy also notes that different municipalities may have different price levels. A fare in Tirana therefore should not be treated as a national tariff for Sarandë, Berat or another city.
A metered fare can include an initial tariff and charges connected with distance and time. The applicable tariff can also differ according to circumstances defined by the local tariff system, such as day or night operation and travel inside or outside the urban area.
App pricing works differently. VrapOn, for example, displays the value of a requested trip before the passenger confirms it. Speed Taxi states that its fares can reflect distance, travel time, an initial fare and possible extra charges such as additional stops or periods of higher demand; fixed prices are also available for some journeys. Patoko advertises upfront pricing for its taxi bookings.
A useful way to compare taxi prices: use the price shown in a local app as one reference, then compare it with any fixed quote offered for the same route. For a metered ride, confirm that the journey will use the taximeter before departure. Long-distance journeys are easier to compare when the total price is agreed in advance.
Taxi Apps That Work in Albania
Local taxi apps are particularly useful for travelers who prefer to enter a destination on a map, see the vehicle approaching and reduce the need to explain an address verbally. Three services with active published information are Patoko, VrapOn and Speed Taxi.
Patoko
Patoko is an Albanian multi-service app that includes licensed taxi booking. Its current app listing names Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë and Elbasan among its operating cities. The company also publishes airport pickup availability and upfront taxi fares.
Patoko supports cash and card payment for taxi services. Its service information also states that international travelers can register and use supported foreign cards. Because payment processing and city coverage can change, the options displayed for the actual ride should be treated as the final check.
VrapOn
VrapOn publishes one of the broader city lists among Albanian taxi apps. Its service pages include Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë, Gjirokastër, Berat, Shkodër, Fier, Korçë, Elbasan, Kamëz and Tirana Airport.
The booking process displays the trip value before confirmation. Passengers can then follow the approaching taxi in real time and communicate with the driver. Scheduled bookings are also available. VrapOn’s current terms provide for cash and electronic payment methods, while noting that payment options can be limited for particular services or geographic areas.
Speed Taxi
Speed Taxi offers app booking, fare estimates, scheduled rides, real-time driver tracking and in-app communication. The company states that its drivers are licensed and that airport transfers and service outside Tirana are available.
There is one payment detail worth knowing before booking: Speed Taxi currently states that its app rides are paid in cash. Card payment should therefore not be assumed for a Speed Taxi booking unless the service itself later shows a different option.
| App | Fare Before Booking | Live Tracking | Payment Information | Published Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patoko | Yes | Available | Cash and card | Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë, Elbasan and expanding coverage |
| VrapOn | Yes | Yes | Cash and supported electronic methods; availability can vary | Multiple cities including Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë, Berat, Gjirokastër, Shkodër and others |
| Speed Taxi | Estimate or fixed price where available | Yes | Cash currently stated by the operator | Operator states service throughout Albania; nearby vehicle availability can vary |
App features, service areas and payment methods can change. The booking screen should always be checked before confirming a ride.
Uber and Bolt in Albania
Uber does not currently operate a ride-booking service in Albania. Bolt’s current international city list also does not include Albania. Opening either app after arrival should therefore not be the only transport plan.
Local taxi apps provide many of the functions international travelers may already be familiar with: entering a destination, receiving a fare estimate or upfront amount, tracking the driver and arranging an airport ride. They remain taxi services with their own pricing and payment rules, so they should not be assumed to work identically to Uber or Bolt.
Taxis at Tirana International Airport
Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza, commonly abbreviated as TIA and often referred to locally as Rinas Airport, has an official airport taxi service operated by Auto Holiday Albania. The airport states that this service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The official vehicles are straightforward to identify at the terminal. Tirana International Airport describes them as yellow taxis carrying Auto Holiday Albania and airport branding. They wait in front of the terminal and at its pick-up area.
Tirana Airport to Central Tirana
The airport’s transport page gives a journey time of approximately 20–25 minutes between TIA and central Tirana, depending on traffic. There is a small but important difference between the airport’s general information page and the current booking page of its official taxi operator.
Why two Tirana Airport taxi prices may appear online
Tirana International Airport’s general taxi page says the trip to central Tirana costs about 2,200 ALL one way. The official TIA Taxi booking service currently lists Tirana from the airport at 2,500 ALL / €26. The first figure is an approximate airport information figure; the second is the operator’s currently published booking fare. Checking the live quote before travel avoids treating either amount as a permanent tariff.
Using a Taxi App at the Airport
An app-booked taxi is not the same as walking directly to the official airport taxi rank. After requesting a ride, check the pickup location shown in the app and confirm it with the driver when necessary. The airport’s official AHA vehicles have their own clearly identified terminal pickup area, so an independently app-booked taxi may arrange the meeting point differently.
- Enter the complete destination rather than only “Tirana” when booking.
- Check the fare or estimated fare shown before confirming.
- Confirm whether payment is cash or card.
- Match the vehicle or registration information with the accepted booking.
- Keep mobile data available until the driver and pickup point have been located.
Official Airport Taxi Prices to Popular Destinations
The official TIA Taxi operator publishes fixed transfer prices from Tirana International Airport to destinations around Albania. These figures are useful benchmarks for longer trips because they show how different an airport-to-city transfer can be from a short urban taxi ride.
| Destination From TIA | Published Fare in Lek | Published Euro Fare | Operator-Listed Travel Estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tirana | 2,500 ALL | €26 | About 26 min |
| Durrës | 3,500 ALL | €37 | About 37 min |
| Shkodër | 7,000 ALL | €74 | About 1 hr 15 min |
| Berat | Published from €95 | €95 | About 1 hr 35 min |
| Vlorë | 11,000 ALL | €115 | About 1 hr 55 min |
| Gjirokastër | 17,000 ALL | €179 | About 3 hr |
| Korçë | 17,000 ALL | €179 | About 3 hr |
| Sarandë | 20,000 ALL | €210 | About 3 hr 30 min |
| Ksamil | 21,000 ALL | €220 | About 3 hr 40 min |
These are published operator prices rather than permanent national taxi tariffs. Road conditions, the exact address, vehicle choice and future fare revisions can affect a booking. The operator’s live booking price should be checked before departure.
TIA Taxi describes its transfer prices as fixed and says its published fare includes road taxes and luggage. It accepts cash in Albanian lek or euros, credit/debit cards and bank transfer.
Airport Taxi, App Taxi or Pre-Booked Transfer
The three options can overlap, but they solve slightly different transport needs.
| Feature | Official Airport Taxi | Local Taxi App | Pre-Booked Transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Available directly after leaving arrivals | Yes | Requires a booking and pickup coordination | Driver or meeting instructions arranged in advance |
| Price known before departure | Published/fixed airport pricing | Usually displayed or estimated in the app | Normally fixed when booked |
| Mobile data needed at pickup | No | Usually yes | Not normally required once arrangements are confirmed |
| Useful for a late arrival | Yes; official service is 24/7 | Depends on nearby driver availability | Yes when booked for the flight |
| Long journey to another Albanian city | Available | Depends on the app and available driver | Well suited to a reserved intercity journey |
For a passenger landing without a local data connection, the official airport rank has the least setup: the branded taxis are already at the terminal. An app becomes more useful when the passenger wants to compare an upfront quote. A scheduled transfer is practical when the destination is far from Tirana, the arrival is at an unusual hour, or a specific vehicle size is needed.
Cash, Cards and Currency
Albanian lek (ALL) is the safest currency to have available for ordinary taxi travel. Card acceptance is expanding through apps and larger operators, but it should not be assumed for every street or rank taxi.
This difference is easy to see among the services themselves. Patoko supports card and cash payments. VrapOn’s current terms allow electronic payments as well as cash but also permit payment methods to vary according to service or location. Speed Taxi currently states that its app payments are cash only. The official TIA Taxi operator accepts both cards and cash.
Some airport services also quote fares in euros. When a driver or booking page provides more than one currency, check which currency will actually be charged. A euro figure and a lek figure displayed side by side may use the operator’s rounded conversion rather than the exact exchange rate at the moment of payment.
Before the car moves, four details should be clear:
- The correct destination
- Taximeter, app fare or fixed total price
- Albanian lek or euro
- Cash or card payment
Taxis Outside Tirana
Tirana has the largest concentration of taxi services, but app-based booking is no longer limited to the capital. VrapOn publishes service in many of Albania’s major destinations, while Patoko’s current app listing includes Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë and Elbasan alongside Tirana.
Durrës, Vlorë and Sarandë
These coastal cities have published local-app coverage and conventional taxi services. During a city ride, the app can be useful for entering an exact hotel, port or beach-area address. For a longer transfer, such as Durrës to Tirana Airport or Sarandë to another city, compare the complete fixed fare rather than trying to estimate the journey from a short urban taxi price.
Berat, Gjirokastër, Shkodër and Korçë
VrapOn publishes taxi-app coverage in all four cities. This does not mean a vehicle will be equally close at every hour or on every edge of the service area. Checking the live app before relying on a specific departure time remains useful, especially for an early transfer to a bus terminal or a long onward journey.
Smaller Towns and Riviera Resorts
Published app coverage is clearer in major cities than in every small coastal or mountain settlement. In places not specifically listed by an app, live vehicle availability should be checked rather than assumed. A taxi arranged through an accommodation provider or a taxi company can be a more predictable option when a fixed departure time matters.
Long-Distance Taxi Trips in Albania
Taxis are also used for intercity travel, particularly from Tirana Airport to destinations without a direct connection that matches a passenger’s arrival time. For a group sharing one vehicle, a fixed taxi price can also be evaluated per person rather than only as the full vehicle cost.
Before confirming a long journey, check the total rather than relying on a loose per-kilometre estimate. The booking should make clear:
- whether the fare is fixed for the entire vehicle;
- whether luggage is included;
- whether road charges are included;
- whether requested stops affect the fare;
- the passenger and luggage capacity of the vehicle;
- the payment currency and accepted payment method;
- whether a child seat or larger vehicle must be requested in advance.
Travel time deserves the same attention as price. A route that looks straightforward by distance can take longer during urban traffic, road works or busy seasonal travel periods. Operator travel times are useful estimates, not scheduled arrival guarantees.
Recognizing a Licensed Taxi
Taxi transport in Albania is a licensed activity. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy states that municipalities issue taxi-service licences under the country’s road-transport rules, while taxi drivers must meet the applicable certification requirements.
Albania’s General Directorate of Road Transport Services specifies a distinctive registration format for taxis: taxi plates use a yellow background with red letters and numbers. Tirana Municipality also requires licensing documentation for taxi operators and vehicles.
At Tirana International Airport, identification is even simpler because the airport specifically tells passengers to look for the yellow Auto Holiday Albania taxis carrying the airport logo.
Metered Rides and Receipts
Albanian taxi rules describe the use of taximeters and require licensed taxi operators to apply the relevant tariff rules. The same regulations provide for a taxi receipt to be supplied when requested. A passenger who needs proof of travel for work or expenses can therefore ask for a receipt rather than assuming one will be handed over automatically.
Useful Albanian Taxi Phrases
Addresses can usually be entered directly into an app, but a few short phrases are useful for conventional taxis and fixed-price bookings.
| English | Albanian |
|---|---|
| How much does it cost to go to…? | Sa kushton deri në…? |
| Can you use the taximeter? | Mund të përdorni taksimetrin? |
| Is this the total price? | A është ky çmimi total? |
| In lek or euros? | Në lekë apo euro? |
| Can I pay by card? | Mund të paguaj me kartë? |
| Please stop here. | Ju lutem, ndaloni këtu. |
| Thank you. | Faleminderit. |
Questions About Taxis in Albania
Are Taxis Expensive in Albania?
There is no single national taxi fare that makes a simple countrywide price possible. Municipal tariffs, the city, distance, travel time, booking method and whether the journey is an airport or intercity transfer can all affect the amount. An app quote is useful for comparing an ordinary city ride, while a fixed total is more informative for a long route.
How Much Is a Taxi From Tirana Airport to Tirana?
Tirana International Airport states that the journey to central Tirana costs about 2,200 ALL and normally takes around 20–25 minutes depending on traffic. Its official taxi operator currently publishes a booking fare of 2,500 ALL / €26 for Tirana. Checking the live operator quote before travelling is the best way to resolve the difference between the approximate airport figure and the current bookable fare.
Does Uber Work in Albania?
No. Uber does not currently offer taxi or ride booking in Albania. Local services such as Patoko, VrapOn and Speed Taxi are used instead.
Does Bolt Work in Albania?
No. Albania is not currently included in Bolt’s published city network.
Can Taxis in Albania Be Paid by Card?
Some can, but card acceptance is not universal. Patoko supports card payments, VrapOn supports electronic payment options where available, and the official Tirana Airport taxi operator accepts cards. Speed Taxi currently states that its app rides are cash only. Carrying some Albanian lek provides a useful backup.
Can a Tirana Airport Taxi Be Paid in Euros?
The official TIA Taxi operator states that it accepts cash in Albanian lek or euros, as well as credit/debit cards and bank transfers. Other taxi operators can have different payment rules.
Are Taxis Available at Tirana Airport During the Night?
Yes. Tirana International Airport states that its official AHA taxi service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Do Taxi Apps Work Outside Tirana?
Yes. VrapOn publishes service across numerous Albanian cities, and Patoko’s app listing includes Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë and Elbasan as well as Tirana. Actual driver availability still depends on the location and time of the request.
Should an Airport Taxi Be Booked in Advance?
Advance booking is not required simply to find the official taxi service at TIA because airport taxis wait at the terminal. Booking ahead is more useful when travelling directly to a distant city, requesting a larger vehicle or child seat, or when a fixed pickup arrangement is preferred.
Is a Taxi Fare Per Passenger or Per Vehicle?
A normal taxi fare is generally associated with use of the vehicle rather than each occupied seat. Albania’s taxi rules state that the taxi payment at departure is calculated for the vehicle’s seating capacity regardless of the number of passengers, while local rules can address additional passengers in relevant circumstances. For airport and private transfers, check the stated passenger limit because a larger group may require a different vehicle.
